Supporting Transitions: Preparing for Primary One at Banana Moon Westhill

Last week, we were delighted to welcome families into the nursery for our ‘Ready for P1’ Information Evening. This event was designed to support parents and carers as their children prepare for the exciting transition from nursery to primary school.

The evening offered parents valuable one-to-one time with our team, a chance to discuss their child’s individual journey, ask questions, and seek advice tailored to their child’s needs. It also provided a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet, connect, and share experiences with one another — building a strong support network as they approach this new chapter together.

Throughout the evening, we shared a range of helpful resources, including our ‘Top Ten Tips’ for both children and parents, offering practical advice to help families feel confident and prepared for the move to school.

How does it support Our Early Learning and Development Programme:

This event aligns closely with the principles of the Banana Moon Early Learning and Development Programme:

Child Development: Supporting each child as an individual, recognising their unique strengths, and helping to build the independence, resilience, and confidence needed for school.

Well-being: Recognising that transitions can be emotional for both children and parents. By providing information, support, and reassurance, we help to reduce anxiety and foster emotional well-being for all involved.

Supporting Families: We believe families are the first educators. This evening reinforced our commitment to working in partnership with families, offering guidance, practical advice, and an open space for conversation.

Early Years Pedagogy: Our approach is rooted in understanding how children learn best — through supportive relationships, play, and preparation that respects their developmental journey.

Environment: By creating a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment during this evening, we mirrored the kind of safe and nurturing setting that supports both children and their families through change.

Links to ELDP Domains:

‘Me’ Domain: Empowering children to develop independence, emotional resilience, and a sense of self as they prepare for new routines, expectations, and experiences at school.

‘Us’ Domain: Strengthening relationships — with Children between parents and staff — and fostering a sense of belonging within the wider community.

Events like this are a vital part of our commitment to ensuring every child feels secure, confident, and ready for the next stage in their learning journey. A huge thank you to all the families who attended — we are so proud to continue alongside you as partners in your child’s development
